Bulgarian Wrestlers Mustafov and Sarakostov Advance to Medal Rounds in Samokov
Bulgarian wrestlers Mert Mustafov and Petko Sarakostov have advanced past the repechage rounds and will now compete for medals at the European Cadet Championships in Samokov. Two other wrestlers have reached the semifinals in their respective categories.
In the 55-kilogram freestyle category, Mustafov secured two victories in the repechage rounds, defeating Lio Rüeg (Switzerland) 7-5 and Piotr Mrozek (Poland) 6-2. Tonight, he will face Temo Turashvili (Georgia) for the bronze medal; Turashvili finished third in Europe and fifth globally last season.
In the 65-kilogram category, Sarakostov defeated Rain Tihas (Estonia) 11-0. Tonight, he will compete against Romanian Istvan Nad, the European champion for boys from the previous year, for the bronze medal.
Radoslav Velikov (45 kg) and Nikolay Ilyev (71 kg) have both advanced past the qualification rounds and are now semifinalists in their respective categories. Velikov defeated Alexander Hamov (Belarus) 7-0 and Daniel Matei (Romania) 10-0. Ilyev defeated Cemal Purcu (Turkey) 7-5, Abel Kacho (Romania) 11-0, and Mark Zemen (Hungary) 10-0.
Stefan Stefanov will also compete for the title in the heavyweight category of 110 kg. His opponent will be Murtaaz Bagdavadze (Georgia), who finished second in the European Championships in 2025 and fifth in the world that same year.
