A major transfer sensation has rocked Bulgarian volleyball. Former national team captain Cvetan Sokolov has signed with Deia for the upcoming season. The 36-year-old outside hitter chose the Burgas team over offers from clubs in China, Russia, and Turkey, opting to continue his illustrious club career with Deia, which has included titles and accolades with teams such as Trento in Italy and Halbank in Turkey.
During the previous season, Sokolov and Mati Kaziski, with coach Radoslav Stoychev, won bronze medals in the Turkish championship with Halbank. The news of Sokolov's signing was confirmed by Deia Sport owner and president Dr. Alexander Madzhurov.
"Yes, we signed with Cvety Sokolov. The contract is for one plus two years. He has achieved a lot abroad and wants to return to his family in Bulgaria. He chose Burgas, he chose Deia, for which we thank him," acknowledged Dr. Madzhurov. He also revealed that the team selection will be complete by the end of May.
Negotiations are ongoing with two foreign players and some Bulgarians. From the previous Deia team, the twin brothers Georgi and Valentin Bratev will remain, as well as some young players from the school. Coach Georgi Dimitrov will continue for the next season.
This is a major coup for Deia and Burgas! Cvety Sokolov's experience and leadership will be a game-changer. But can they keep him for more than just a year? Let's hope the Burgas fans are ready for an exciting season!
