Ivan Ivanov, the 17-year-old Bulgarian tennis prodigy and former junior world champion, was eliminated in the first round of the Challenger 50 tournament in Cerreto Sannita, Italy. Ivanov lost to the host's representative, Lorenzo Carboni, with a score of 5-7, 1-6. The match lasted for one hour and 39 minutes. Carboni, who is 20 years old, played in the qualifiers for the Masters tournament in Rome just two weeks ago.
Ivanov made a break in the first game of the match, but quickly lost it to be tied at 1-1. The Bulgarian lost two break points at 4-3 in his favor, and then lost three consecutive games after 5-4 to lose the first set 5-7. This had a negative impact on Ivanov, who was down 0-4 in the second set, which proved decisive for the final outcome of the match.
Earlier today, another Bulgarian national, Piotr Nesterov, qualified for the second round of the singles at the tournament in Cerreto Sannita. Nesterov, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser from the qualifiers, defeated the host's representative Federico Bondioli with a score of 6-2, 6-4. His next opponent will be Manas Dharmne from India.
Nesterov will also participate in the doubles competition, where he will be paired with another Bulgarian, Antoni Genov.
Ivan Ivanov's loss is a big disappointment, but he's still young and has plenty of time to bounce back. What's your take on the Bulgarian tennis scene these days?
