Bulgarian tennis player Elizara Yaneva suffered a dramatic loss in her debut at the qualifiers for the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, Roland Garros. The 19-year-old Bulgarian fell to the more experienced Romanian player Irina-Camelia Begu with a score of 6:2, 3:6, 4:6. The match lasted one hour and 39 minutes.
The 35-year-old Begu, with 246 victories in 487 WTA matches, outplayed Yaneva in the crucial moments. The match was interrupted for nearly an hour due to rain when the score was 2:2 in the first set. After the resumption, Yaneva dominated the court and won four consecutive games to take the first set 6:2.
In the second set, Yaneva was broken in the first game but managed to turn the score to 3:1 in her favor with exceptional play. Unfortunately, she lost the next five games and the set 3:6, leading to a deciding third set. Yaneva fell behind 1:3 in the third set but managed to tie at 3:3. However, after reaching 4:4, she lost two consecutive games and was eliminated from the tournament.
The top-ranked Bulgarian woman, Viktoriya Tomova, will begin her Roland Garros qualifiers tomorrow against 28-year-old Spanish player Irene Burillo, who is ranked 217th in the world. Also, tomorrow, Grigor Dimitrov will play his first round qualifier match against 22-year-old Portuguese player Jaime Faria.
This is heartbreaking for Bulgarian fans, but Yanева needs to keep her head up and learn from this experience. What's next for Bulgaria's young talents at Roland Garros?
