A Competitive Start Fades Against Hosts
The Bulgarian women's volleyball team endured their second defeat of the tournament at the Volleyball Nations League. Playing on home soil, Brazil proved too strong in the latter stages, securing a 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-13. While the Bulgarian side showed resilience early on, particularly in the opening two sets, they ultimately could not sustain their momentum against the tournament hosts.
Head coach Marcelo Abondanza made a single adjustment to the starting lineup compared to the previous victory against the Dominican Republic. Kalina Veneva entered the starting rotation in place of Miroslava Paseva, a change intended to bolster the team's attack and serve reception. The match began with competitive intensity, as Bulgaria established an early lead of 9-5. However, Brazil responded with a decisive run, highlighted by a direct service ace from Tainara, to level the score at 12-12.
Brazil Pulls Away in Crucial Moments
The first set remained tight until the final exchanges. Brazil reached set point at 24-21, but Bulgaria fought back. An attack by Veneva and a block by Sojkova brought the deficit down to a single point at 23-24. Nevertheless, Kisi Nascimento capitalized on the next opportunity with a successful spike, handing Brazil the first set 25-23.
Bulgaria managed to find rhythm in the second set as well, overcoming an initial 4-0 deficit to take an 8-7 lead. The teams traded points until a 14-14 deadlock midway through the set. From there, the Brazilian "Selecao" raised their intensity, closing out the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set saw a complete shift in momentum. Bulgaria lost their tempo early, allowing Brazil to build an 11-point cushion at 14-3. Despite several rotational changes by Abondanza, the visitors could not halt the hosts' dominance. Brazil sealed the third set 25-13, concluding the match.
