The curtains closed on the 42nd European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Varna, and the story is written in gold. Bulgaria stormed the podium, securing four titles and eight medals overall to claim the top spot in the medal standings. It was a masterclass in precision, power, and national pride on the home floor of the Varna Arena.
A Historic Junior Surge
The junior division erupted with history on the first two days. The trio of Dea Emilova, Siyana Alekova, and Aleksandra Petrova captured the first-ever team gold for Bulgaria in this category. Siyana Alekova added individual glory by becoming European champion on the hoop, while Dea Emilova secured silver on clubs. The future is bright, and it is wearing Bulgarian colors.
Nikolova’s Golden Reign
Senior individual Stilyana Nikolova was the undeniable star of the show. She amassed a staggering haul: silver in the all-around, gold in the team event, gold on clubs, and silver on both ball and ribbon. Her dominance was absolute. Teammate Eva Brezalieva also contributed to the team gold, finishing sixth on ribbon, seventh on hoop, and eighth on ball in her individual finals, while ranking in the top 20 for the all-around.
Team Heartbreak and Future Focus
Not every routine ended in celebration. The senior ensemble, featuring Sofia Ivanova, Margarita Vasilieva, Magdalina Minevska, Emiliya Obretenova, Raya Bozhilova, and Magdalena Volkova, finished sixth in the all-around and eighth in the five-ball final, leaving the podium empty. Federation President Iliana Raeva praised the overall campaign but stressed that the work is never done.
With a record 43 nations and 362 gymnasts competing, the stakes were higher than ever. Now, eyes turn to Frankfurt, Germany, where the World Championships in August will determine the first Olympic qualifying spots for Los Angeles 2028. The journey continues.
