Thunder Over Plovdiv, But No Goal

The storm clouds gathered over Plovdiv before the whistle even blew. Rain lashed down on Hristo Botev Stadium as the Bulgarian national team faced Montenegro in a fiercely contested friendly. The atmosphere was electric, with 2,323 fans braving the weather to witness a match that would define the mood before the crucial clash against Moldova in four days. But destiny had a cruel twist for the "Lions."

Alexander Dimitrov deployed a balanced side, with Daniel Naumov anchoring the defense and Kristian Dimitrov partnering Theodor Ivanov at the back. The midfield trio of Petko Panayotov, Andrian Kraev, and Nikola Iliev drove the engine, while Marin Petkov and Lukas Petkov provided width for striker Tsonislav Yordanov. From the seventh minute, Marin Petkov threatened to break the deadlock, his cross from the left skimming past the post. Montenegro responded with intent, as Driton Caimaj tested Naumov, only to be stopped with ease.

The Breakthrough That Wouldn't Be

Bulgaria pressed hard. Dimitar Velkovski’s free-kick sailed wide, and Milan Vukotich’s surge was halted by Naumov’s ice-cold reflexes. In the 26th minute, Petkov’s low drive from a free-kick forced a diving save from Balsha Popovic. The home side created beauty—a sweeping attack finished by Panayotov from ten yards out, yet the ball kissed the air just 40 centimeters from the post. Montenegro nearly answered with Stefan Lončar’s thunderous effort, but Naumov tipped it away.

Substitutions changed the rhythm. Borislav Tsonev, Vladimir Nisev, and Emil Tsenov entered for Kraev, Yordanov, and Iliev. The Greek referee, Ioannis Papadopoulos, waved play on after a controversial shoulder charge by the Montenegrin keeper on Nisev outside the box. Tsonev nearly made amends with a diagonal shot that missed the corner by mere inches.

Sekulic Seals the Fate

Then, disaster struck. In the 66th minute, Milan Roganović’s low cross found Balsha Sekulić, but Naumov produced a heroics save, parrying it to a corner. Just 120 seconds later, Sekulić redeemed himself. A pass found him on the right, he cut inside, and Naumov was left helpless as the ball nestled in the net. 1-0.

Bulgaria threw everything forward. Vladimir Nisev’s equalizing strike was blocked by a defender in the dying moments. A comical slip by Popovic rolling the ball to the corner offered no relief. The final whistle blew, leaving the hosts with frustration and a mountain to climb in Chișinău.
