The Romanian capital, Bucharest, will host the NATO Annual Hybrid Symposium on October 15-16, marking the first time the event takes place in Southeast Europe. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the symposium will focus on enhancing coordination among NATO allies in response to hybrid threats and strengthening collective resilience against destabilization efforts in the Euro-Atlantic region.

Romania's Growing Influence in NATO

This symposium is a significant milestone for Romania, as it is the first time the event is held in Southeast Europe. The hosting of this symposium is seen by Romanian officials as a recognition of the country's growing role within NATO, particularly in security and resilience issues. Previous editions of the symposium have been held in Helsinki, Prague, and Oslo.

Minister’s Emphasis on Cybersecurity

Romania’s Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, underscored the importance of closer cooperation among NATO allies in addressing hybrid threats, emphasizing that such threats are borderless and require a unified response. She highlighted Romania’s pivotal role as the host of the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre, which further solidifies the country’s commitment to cybersecurity.

“Hybrid threats know no borders, and we must increase our capacity to defend ourselves,” Țoiu stated. “We are committed to developing security solutions that protect democracy and critical infrastructure for the entire Alliance. We are pleased that our diplomatic efforts have led to the trust of allied states in selecting Romania to host this elite platform aimed at strengthening interoperability among member states.”
