Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu announced that the CS Dinamo Stadium in Bucharest will be renamed after legendary football coach Mircea Lucescu. The decision is a tribute to one of the most important figures in Romanian and international football. “With this decision, we celebrate not only a coach but an institution of Romanian, European, and global football – Mircea Lucescu,” said Predoiu.
Predoiu highlighted the long-term impact and achievements of Lucescu’s career, stating that “Mircea Lucescu has demonstrated that perennial value is built through science and continuous hard work, measured in decades.”
The minister noted that Lucescu has redefined the way football is played and thought about, making him a visionary coach. “Having been shaped in the spirit of discipline and tactical intelligence, Mircea Lucescu was first a top-tier player and then a visionary coach,” Predoiu continued.
Predoiu further emphasized that Lucescu built competitive teams in challenging circumstances, discovered and developed world-class players. “He has shown that excellence is not a coincidence but a creed and a program applied with intelligence and organized work,” the minister concluded.
The renaming of the CS Dinamo stadium to honor Lucescu is seen as a gesture of recognition. “Today, by naming the C.S. Dinamo Bucharest Arena after him, we are not only paying tribute but also acknowledging a life dedicated to excellence,” Predoiu stated.
“We have confidence that his name will inspire every athlete who steps into the future Mircea Lucescu Arena,” the minister added.
Lucescu, the former coach of the national football team, passed away on April 7, at 80 years old, at the Emergency University Hospital in Bucharest, where he was hospitalized after being injured during a national team training session. He was buried with military honors at Bellu Cemetery on April 10.
