Croatian tennis player Borna Gojo (ATP ranking 172) secured his place in the final qualifying round of Roland Garros after a thrilling three-set match against Portugal's Henrique Rocha (ATP ranking 118). Gojo won the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9) despite a dramatic tie-break that saw him save two match points.
Gojo Saves Two Match Points in Tie-Break
Gojo began the match strongly against the 11th seed qualifier and took a decisive lead with a break to 3-1 in the first set, leaving Rocha with no chance to break serve. This advantage continued into the second set until Rocha made a break in the eighth game, followed by another to take the match into a third set.
In the third set, Rocha led until Gojo equalized at 4-4. Neither player had the opportunity to break serve for the remaining four games, leading to a decisive tie-break. Rocha took an early 3-0 and 5-2 lead, but Gojo fought back to 5-5. Despite Rocha extending to 7-5, Gojo equalized again to 7-7 before saving two match points. Gojo managed to save the second match point by hitting an incredible lob after Rocha’s shot hit the baseline. In the next two exchanges, Rocha missed twice, handing Gojo a spot in the final qualifying round.
Gojo's Path to the Main Draw
Gojo will face Austrian Jurij Rodionov (ATP ranking 158) in the final qualifying round for a spot in the main draw of Roland Garros. This will be their first meeting. If Gojo secures a place in the main draw, it will be his second appearance at Roland Garros and fourth at a Grand Slam. Four years ago, he advanced one round in Paris, and his best result came at the 2023 US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals.
Borna Gojo's performance in these qualifiers is outstanding! His ability to save two match points in the tie-break shows incredible mental fortitude. Will he make it to the main draw? Let's hope so!
