Blind athlete Victor Asenov is gearing up for his next major challenge: attempting to ride a standard bicycle independently. At 30 years old, Asenov has already participated in numerous mountain races and ultramarathons, as well as tandem cycling competitions. This time, his goal is to ride a bike for several kilometers on his own.
"Nine kilometers on a bicycle, all by myself. That's my new big challenge, and I'm really excited! I've even been having trouble sleeping the last few nights because of my nerves," Asenov said.
On May 10th at 1 PM, Asenov will start his journey, aiming to traverse the entire closed section of Tsarigradsko Shosse Boulevard in Sofia, from Dimitar Peshev Street to Orlov Most. He will join a large cycling event organized by the Sofia Municipality, the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation, and Visit Sofia at 2 PM.
"I love constantly challenging myself, and it energizes me. The support I get from the streets and social media is a huge boost. I want to thank the organizers for opening their doors to me as part of the welcoming event for the Giro d'Italia. I'm also grateful to my partners from Нечовешки магазини, ОББ, Devin Mineraлна, and Decathlon for helping me follow my dreams. They are big – I want to run and cycle in major competitions in Bulgaria and around the world."
"That's the message I want to send to people: be inspired, dream big, and be bold. I will be waiting for everyone who wants to join me on May 10th at 1:30 PM at Orlov Most for the cycling event," Asenov added.
In March of last year, Victor became the first blind person in the world to complete the Everesting challenge, climbing from Alako hut to Cherni Vrah 19 times in 46 hours without sleep. He did this as a charitable act for a school for guide dogs.
