Authorities Taking Coordinated Actions After Man's Death in Vitosha National Park
Following the death of a young man in Vitosha National Park, authorities are taking coordinated actions to ensure the safety of tourists. The man was reportedly killed by a black leopard. According to the Sofia Directorate of Environmental Protection (SDEP), the incident occurred on May 16.
A multi-agency meeting was held, including representatives from the Sofia police, Ministry of Environment and Water, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Vitosha National Park, and the Sofia municipality. The agencies are now conducting research in the area, including a survey by experts, photo traps, and drone surveillance of the perimeter.
It is estimated that there are around 18-20 black leopards in the regions of Vitosha, Plana, and Verila. Other wildlife in the area includes deer, roe deer, wild boar, and wolves. Authorities are urging citizens to adhere to safety rules when hiking in the mountains, such as traveling in groups, making noise while moving, not leaving food waste, avoiding off-marked trails, and remaining calm if encountering a wild animal.
Black leopards typically avoid human contact, but can become aggressive in certain situations. Until the investigation is complete, authorities advise people to avoid the area where the incident occurred.
This is a serious situation, and everyone should stay vigilant. But come on, how can we not respect these majestic creatures? They belong here, but so do we. We just need to learn to coexist. Don't you think so?
