The search for a new head coach at Besiktas continues to dominate headlines in Istanbul following the departure of Sergen Yalcin. Amid a flurry of speculation, reports emerged suggesting that the club’s management had entered into contact with Kurban Kurbanov, the highly successful manager of Karabakh FK. However, these claims have been firmly dismissed by the club’s official leadership.

Official denial from Besiktas

Oender Ozen, the Football Director of Besiktas, addressed the rumors directly in an interview with Azerbaijani media. He clarified that the allegations regarding any ongoing negotiations or interest in Kurbanov are entirely unfounded. Ozen emphasized that while the club is actively evaluating potential candidates, Kurbanov is not currently on their shortlist.

In his statement, Ozen expressed respect for the Azerbaijani coach while shutting down the narrative of impending talks. "The names of our potential new head coach candidates have not been finalized yet. However, we have no interest or initiative directed towards Kurban Kurbanov," Ozen stated. He praised Kurbanov as a valuable and highly successful coach, noting that they hold him in high esteem. "However, such a subject is not on Besiktas club's agenda at the moment. I would like to state that the news circulating is incorrect."

Kurbanov's impressive track record

The speculation surrounding Kurbanov is understandable given his domestic dominance in Azerbaijan. Since taking charge of Karabakh FK in August 2008, the 54-year-old has transformed the club into a regional powerhouse. His tenure has been marked by unprecedented success in the Azerbaijan Premier League, where he has secured 11 championship titles.

Beyond league success, Kurbanov has also guided his team to victory in the Azerbaijan Cup on six occasions. His statistical record is equally compelling. Having managed 740 matches for Karabakh, Kurbanov boasts a win rate of nearly 60%. His overall record stands at 437 wins, 158 draws, and 145 losses, resulting in an average of 1.99 points per game. This consistency has made him one of the most decorated managers in the region, even if Besiktas has ruled him out as a successor.
