Massive Pilgrimage at the Temple of Saint Sava
Long lines of faithful stretched through the streets of Belgrade early Tuesday morning, forming a river of people eager to enter the Temple of Saint Sava. Pilgrims waited patiently to venerate one of Orthodoxy’s most significant relics, the Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary, which has arrived in Serbia after more than six centuries away from the region. The devotion displayed was profound, with some devotees arriving before dawn, queuing up as early as 5:00 AM. By midday, many had waited over six hours, undeterred by the growing heat or the length of the queue.
The lines extended along Nebojšina Street, stretching from the intersection with Hadži Milentijeva Street. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere remained calm and dignified. People of all ages joined the pilgrimage, from the elderly to the young. To shield themselves from the midday sun, some pilgrims opened umbrellas, creating a colorful canopy along the sidewalk. The plaza in front of the temple was packed with believers waiting to pray before the relic, which is believed to possess healing powers.
A Relic of Deep Historical Significance
The Holy Belt, or Kamara, holds a special place in Orthodox tradition. According to legend, the Virgin Mary wove the belt herself from camel skin. She kept it with her during pivotal moments in the biblical narrative, including when she received the good news of Christ’s birth and when he was crucified. Its arrival in Belgrade has sparked a wave of religious tourism, with visitors traveling from other cities in Serbia, Republika Srpska, and even as far as Canada, as noted by local reporters on the scene.
Those who managed to enter the temple around noon described the experience as worthwhile despite the long wait. The relic will remain on display until May 29, and organizers expect thousands more believers from Serbia and the wider region to visit in the coming days. The event highlights the enduring spiritual connection many in the Balkans feel toward such historical artifacts, drawing communities together in shared faith and tradition.
