The Telenovela Ends
The drama is over. The curtain falls on the most talked-about transfer saga in Romanian football this summer. Gigi Becali, the billionaire owner of FCSB, has officially declared victory in the war of words, even if his club lost the player. The target? Kennedy Boateng, the Togolese international defender who spent the last two years anchoring the defense at Dinamo Bucharest.
For weeks, rumors swirled like a storm over the Arena Națională. Boateng left Dinamo immediately after the 1-2 defeat to FCSB in the Conference League playoff final on May 29. A free agent, the logical destination seemed to be the stadium of his former club. But logic rarely governs the Balkan transfer market.
"I don't even talk to Dinamo anymore," Becali stated bluntly on Digi Sport. "I didn't need to talk to them for Boateng. His agent said he'd go anywhere. We made an offer. He said he'd give an answer in three days, then he said he signed for 900,000 euros as a signing bonus."
The Price of Loyalty
That staggering €900,000 signing fee is what killed the deal. Becali had previously argued that Boateng’s salary demands were reasonable for FCSB’s budget, but the upfront payment was non-negotiable. Reports indicate Boateng will earn €80,000 per month at his new, undisclosed club. Compare that to the highest salary at FCSB last season: €360,000 per year for top scorer Florin Tănase. The financial gap is astronomical.
Boateng was a star in Bucharest. Arriving in the summer of 2024 from Austria Lustenau, his market value skyrocketed from €400,000 to €1.2 million. In 74 matches for Dinamo, he scored eight goals and provided two assists. Dinamo offered him a 30% raise to €20,000 per month to extend his contract. He refused. Instead, he chose the big payout elsewhere.
The saga concludes not with a handshake in Pipera, but with a signature in a foreign land. Becali claimed innocence in the negotiations, but the result is the same. The defender is gone, the money is spent, and the telenovela is officially canceled.
