The atmosphere in Maribor was electric as Serbian athletics delivered a masterclass on the track. But let’s be clear: this wasn’t just another weekend of competition. This was a statement. A declaration. And at the center of the storm stood one man: Darijo Bašić Palković.

The Sprint Sensation Emerges

Once known as a versatile middle-distance runner, Bašić Palković has transformed into a sprinting force to be reckoned with. His coach, Zoran Kalmar of SP Subotica, famously called him "the best middle-distance runner among sprinters and the best sprinter among middle-distance runners." That prophecy became reality in Slovenia.

On Sunday, he didn't just compete; he conquered. He blasted to victory in the 200 meters with a stunning personal best of 20.75 seconds. But wait, there's more. In the 100 meters, he clocked 10.45 seconds, securing second place but etching his name into the annals of Serbian history. That time is one of the fastest ever recorded by a Serbian athlete. The national record of 10.33, set by Slobodan Branković in 1993, still stands, but Bašić Palković has closed the gap dramatically.

Triumphant Trio

He wasn't alone in glory. The Serbian contingent produced three gold medals on the final day. Milica Emini from AK Vojvodina cleared the 110-meter hurdles with precision, finishing in 13.16 seconds. Meanwhile, Maja Gajić from AOK Košutnjak dominated the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 57.90 seconds.

This follows a whirlwind two weeks for Bašić Palković, who previously shattered Vojvodina records in Bratislava. The momentum is undeniable. Other athletes like Tamara Milutinović, Dajana Bašić Palković, and Una Jovanović also posted strong results, while Dimitrije Novaković added depth to the team's success, having won the triple jump earlier in the week before finishing fourth in the long jump.

From the Iztok Ciglarič Memorial on May 17 to the Poljane meet on May 24, Serbian athletics didn't just participate—they arrived. The future looks bright, fast, and fiercely competitive.
