Atletico Madrid is reportedly targeting Chelsea's left-back Marko Kočuj as one of the key summer signings, following the club's desire to bolster their defensive line before the next season, according to Spanish media. The sports director, Mateo Alemani, aims to reinforce the team's defense.
The Spanish representative, who still has two years left on his contract with the London club, is reportedly open to a return to La Liga, which has further sparked the interest of the Madrid club.
Atletico believes that the 27-year-old defender would represent a significant upgrade on the left side of their defense.
Simultaneously, the club is close to a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers' midfielder Joao Gomes. British media reports suggest that Atletico has reached an initial agreement for the transfer of the Brazilian player, worth around €45 million.
Gomes is expected to arrive as a response to the midfield problems Atletico faced during the season, particularly due to the injuries of Pablo Barrios and Jonny Castro, and the fact that experienced player Koke is no longer a long-term solution in the starting lineup.
The Atletico board plans to release certain players, including Jose Maria Gimenez and Clement Lenglet, to free up space in the budget for salaries and facilitate new transfers.
The potential arrivals of Kočuj and Gomes would be a clear signal that the Madrid club is preparing for a substantial team reconstruction, aiming to compete more evenly for trophies in Spain and Europe in the coming seasons.
