Aston Villa and Freiburg Aim for First European League Victory

English club Aston Villa and German side Freiburg will play in the UEFA Europa League final for the first time in their histories, each seeking their first international trophy.

Both Aston Villa and Freiburg will make their debut in the UEFA Europa League final tomorrow.

Aston Villa, who finished second in the league phase with a 21-point total, secured seven wins and one loss in their eight matches. They advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Lille in the last 16 and Bologna in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they defeated Nottingham Forest to reach the final.

Freiburg, with five wins, two draws, and one loss for a total of 17 points, finished seventh in the league phase. They advanced to the last 16 by defeating Genk in a comeback victory. They then defeated Celta Vigo in the quarterfinals and Porto in the semifinals to secure their place in the final.

A 44-YEAR WAIT FOR A TROPHY

Aston Villa, one of England's most significant clubs, is seeking its first European trophy in 44 years.

In the 1980-81 season, Aston Villa won the Premier League and then contested the UEFA Champions League the following year. They defeated Bayern Munich in the 1 1982 final in Rotterdam and went on to win the UEFA Super Cup against Barcelona later that year.

FREIBURG'S DREAM

Freiburg is aiming for its biggest achievement in club history with their first European final appearance.

The German club has never won the Bundesliga or the DFB-Pokal. They have risen to the Bundesliga four times from the second division and reached the DFB-Pokal final once in the 2021-2022 season, where they lost to RB Leipzig in the penalty shootout.

TOTTENHAM'S FIRST VICTORY

The first UEFA Cup, rebranded from the Fairs Cup in 1971-72, was won by Tottenham Hotspur. In the final, they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 and 2-1. In the most recent final, Tottenham defeated Manchester United 1-0 to win the trophy.

ENGLAND AND SPAIN DOMINATE

The UEFA Europa League has seen the most appearances by English and Spanish teams in the final.

Both countries have reached the final 19 times.
