An eight-year-old karateka from Burgas has claimed a European championship title, marking a significant milestone for young martial artists in Bulgaria. Danaya Lana, a student of the local club SKK "Kiokushin Spirit," won gold at the 39th European Kiokushin Karate Championships held in Varna. The tournament drew 866 competitors from 21 countries, making it one of the most prestigious events on the regional calendar.
A Dominant Debut
For Lana, this was her first appearance at such a high-level competition. She competed in the Girls 8-9 age group, in the over 30kg weight class. Her path to the title was swift and decisive. In all three of her matches, she eliminated her opponents within the regular time limits by "ippon," which signifies a clean and dominant victory in Kiokushin karate.
Her coach, Shihan Gergana Apostolova-Kostova, confirmed the victory, noting the young athlete's composure and technical skill. "She handled the pressure incredibly well," the coach noted. Lana's success highlights the growing strength of youth development programs in Bulgarian martial arts.
More Success for Kiokushin Spirit
Lana was not the only representative from Burgas to find success. The club sent ten athletes to the European tournament. Dobromir Yanev secured a silver medal in the Men's over 45 category, in the over 85kg weight class. Yaroslava Prudnikova competed in the Girls 16-17 category, over 65kg, reaching the semi-finals before taking home a bronze medal.
Stratimir Stratiev, the defending European champion in the Junior division, made his debut in the senior Men's category. He fought his way to the quarter-finals, where he faced Alejandro Navarro, a favorite in the Kiokushin world. Although Stratiev lost that bout, he secured a fourth-place finish in the under 90kg division.
Valentin Zhelezov, another debutant in the same weight class, was eliminated in the qualifiers. The rest of the Kiokushin Spirit contingent—Kaloyan Stoyanov, Maria Taneva, Viktoria Pehlivanova, Tervel Vasilev, and Nadezhda Atanasova—also fell short of the podium.
