At 43 years old, Kreg Gordon is set to make his World Cup debut this year, despite having played in only three matches during the season. The Scottish national team, playing in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, has included the experienced goalkeeper Kreg Gordon, who has 43 years under his belt.
Since his debut for the national team in 2004, Gordon has been a stalwart for Scottish football. Some of his teammates, who will play at this World Cup, were not even born when he first played for Scotland. If Gordon makes an appearance, he will become the second-oldest player in World Cup history, behind only the legendary Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who played at the age of 45 in 2018.
Scotland will face a tough group at the World Cup, alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Haiti. Curiously, the three goalkeepers on the list have played only four league matches this season for their clubs. Gordon, who has played three games for Heart of Midlothian, has been dealing with shoulder injuries throughout the year.
The first-choice goalkeepers, Angus Gunn from Nottingham Forest and Liam Kelly from Rangers, also had limited minutes in their club matches this season.
However, manager Steve Clarke is confident in his goalkeepers.
"As long as the goalkeepers are working hard in training, I believe they can step up and play a series of matches. We have received very good reports about Gordon from Heart of Midlothian, and he assures us that he is completely ready," Clarke stated.
Gordon earned his place on the team due to his significant contributions during the World Cup qualification matches.
