The management of Crvena Zvezda has officially parted ways with head coach Sasa Obradovic. The decision comes immediately after the club’s elimination from the ABA League playoffs by local rivals Partizan, ending their season on a sour note. The split appears to be the culmination of mounting tensions within the locker room, specifically involving forward Chima Moneke.

Public Clash Over Tactics

In the aftermath of the heavy defeat, Moneke did not hold back his criticism regarding the team's performance. He expressed deep frustration with the tactical approach, claiming the squad lacked direction both offensively and defensively. According to Moneke, the team’s game plan had become predictable and overly reliant on isolation plays and excessive dribbling.

"We didn’t know what we were doing. It was easy to defend us because we always played the same way," Moneke stated. He argued that even previous close victories, such as the narrow win against Bologna, were built on poor fundamentals. "We realized then that we had a problem. Isolation, dribbling, dribbling, dribbling. That is not how it should be."

Obradovic’s Previous Warnings

The conflict between the coach and the player is not new. Obradovic previously coached Moneke during his tenure at Monaco, giving him insight into the American forward’s personality. In a recent television interview, Obradovic described Moneke as a "good guy" but also labeled him an "ego-maniac" who views everything through the lens of statistics.

Obradovic recalled instances where Moneke fought for more playing time, despite the coach’s belief that other players like Mike James or Jordan Loyd were better suited for certain roles. The coach noted that Moneke was often offended by limited minutes, once suggesting that if he had played more, they would have won the French league title. Obradovic firmly rejected this notion, emphasizing that team success does not always align with individual stats. This underlying friction likely contributed to the abrupt end of their collaboration in Belgrade.
