In Modena, Italy, seven people were injured on Saturday when a vehicle plowed into pedestrians at high speed in the city center, according to police. Two individuals are in critical condition.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences to the injured and thanked the citizens and police for their intervention. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Moroccan-origin Italian citizen Salim el Kudri, was arrested and was armed with a knife, attacking bystanders.

A 55-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man, both in critical condition, were transported by helicopter to the hospital in Bologna. Two other individuals are seriously injured. The driver, in his thirties, was arrested, and it is believed he intentionally hit pedestrians and, while fleeing, attacked bystanders with a knife.

In Ravarino near Modena, a search of the suspect's house is underway. Preliminary investigations indicate no ties to radicalization or subversive groups, but there are signs of significant mental instability. The suspect, El Kudri, had previously undergone psychiatric treatment.
