The players of Varaždin took a significant step towards securing a European spot after drawing 1-1 with Lokomotiva in a crucial match. The point earned them a solid position in the fourth place of the HNL, which leads to European competition.
"A lot has happened this week, things that I don't particularly like. There has been a lot of filming and claims that Europe was already secured, which distracted the focus. We don’t do things that way out of respect for other teams. I knew everything was possible. I knew how crucial this point was. It's a big step towards Europe. This is now very special, better than last year," said Nikola Šafarić, the Varaždin coach, adding that a draw was the most realistic outcome.
"Lokomotiva was our toughest opponent. After they equalized, we had a chance through Latković, but we didn't score. That's how it goes in such matches. A draw is the fairest result," emphasized Šafarić.
With two matches left, Varaždin has 48 points and holds the fourth place with one point less than third-placed Rijeka. Practically, they have secured the fourth spot leading to the Conference League. Lokomotiva is six points behind, while Istra 1961 is nine points behind. Istra would need to win all remaining matches while Varaždin must lose their last two to not qualify. It's very unlikely, making Varaždin 99% assured of their European spot.
"We need a mathematical point. If Istra wins all three matches and we lose both, that's the only option. My players will be a bit more relaxed in the last two matches than today. The match's weight was felt," concluded Šafarić.
Lokomotiva's coach Nikica Jelavić also believes that a point is fair for both teams.
"It was a good, lively match, but without many chances. Varaždin capitalized on one of our mistakes. We stabilized later, scored, and were strong in possession, but couldn't turn it around. It's a shame we won't be in the European chase, but the top four teams deserve their positions," stated Jelavić, whose team will face Dinamo and Hajduk in the last two matches.
"These will be the sweetest two matches where we have a lot to show. We'll give opportunities to younger players. Our main goal is promotion and developing young players so we can sell them and survive," concluded Jelavić.
