Valencia Basket Sets Sights on Unprecedented EuroLeague Glory
The basketball world is gearing up for a spectacle in Athens, where this year's EuroLeague final four promises a clash between giants and an absolute newcomer dreaming wide-eyed. While teams like Real Madrid, Olympiacos, and Fenerbahce feel at home on the biggest stage, Valencia Basket has managed to enter the "elite society" and is attempting what no one has done in a full 27 years!
A New Era Begins
After a historic season and an incredible comeback against Panathinaikos, Valencia has reached their first EuroLeague final four. They have become the fourth newcomer in the last 11 editions of the elite competition (following Fenerbahçe in 2015, Lokomotiv Kuban in 2016, and Monaco in 2023).
The club’s goal at the start of the season was merely to fight for a playoff spot, but their appetite has now grown. Valencia aims to win the title on their first attempt, a feat last seen in the distant year of 1999. That year, Žalgiris Kaunas, led by Jonas Kazlauskas, lifted the trophy in Minsk in their first appearance at the final tournament.
The Lithuanians had defeated Olympiacos in the semifinals and the favored Kinder Bologna in the final (82:74), featuring legends like Predrag "Saša" Danilović, Rigoberto Nesterovič, and coach Ettore Messina. The stars of that Žalgiris squad included Tautius Edna and Anthony Bowie, with support from the Žukauskas brothers and Jurgis Zidek.
The Valencia Dream
The fact that makes Valencia’s success even more impressive is that not a single player on the roster, nor coach Pedro Martinez, has ever participated in a final four before. Still, names like Montero, Badia, Pradilla, and the young De La Riva show that they don’t shy away from anyone – neither from the charged atmosphere nor from the traditions of their rivals.
