The Olympic Picture Gallery of Maroussi is preparing to host an exceptional exhibition where art intersects with sports through human relationships, personal journeys, and rare works by renowned artists. The exhibition, titled "Spiros Zachariopoulos and His Painter Friends", presents a significant piece of the personal collection of the distinguished Greek athlete.
The Exhibition
The exhibition is organized by the Municipality of Maroussi and the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Renia Khalioti, with the curator being the artist and Associate Professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, Eleana Martinou. The exhibition features works by Giannis Tsarouchis, Basil Fotopoulos, George Stathopoulos, Minos Argirakis, and Eleana Martinou, going beyond a simple artistic presentation. It highlights personal connections and relationships formed throughout Zachariopoulos's life.
Significance and Background
Spiros Zachariopoulos wrote his name in Greek sports history as the first Greek to win a European medal in the 1500m indoor track event in Grenoble in 1972. His subsequent career as a physical education teacher and his work with the "Sports for All" program fostered strong connections with notable figures in the arts. These relationships are reflected through artworks acquired as gifts of friendship and appreciation.
A special place in the exhibition is given to the friendship between Giannis Tsarouchis and Spiros Zachariopoulos in Cyprus in 1981, where Tsarouchis created a portrait of the athlete and the landscape of his home, creating one of the most unique features of the exhibition.
The exhibition in Maroussi gains further significance due to Eleana Martinou's long-standing relationship with the Municipality of Maroussi, where she has been teaching painting for years. Her personal connection to Spiros Zachariopoulos adds a strongly biographical character to the event.
The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 18, 2026 in the "Spirou Loues" hall of the Olympic Picture Gallery of Maroussi, with the exhibition running until June 26. The organizers are also preparing a musical surprise for the opening night, which will be announced soon.

This exhibition is a true celebration of the spirit of Spiros Zachariopoulos, blending his athletic legacy with art and human connections. How do you think such exhibitions can inspire the next generation of athletes and artists in Greece?
