English coach Thomas Tuchel has surprised fans by omitting Manchester United's veteran defender Harry Maguire from the 26-man squad for the World Cup in North America. This decision has shocked the 33-year-old player, who believed he would be a part of the squad for the tournament in North America. Maguire has made 66 appearances for England since his debut in 2017 and scored seven goals. He was a key player under Gareth Southgate's guidance in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and the 2020 European Championship, though he missed Euro 2024 due to injury.

Maguire: Shocked and Disappointed

Tuchel surprisingly recalled Maguire in March for matches against Uruguay and Japan, his first call-up since September 2022. Despite playing 24 matches this season and helping United secure a place in the Champions League, the former captain of the "Red Devils" will not be traveling to the World Cup. Speaking to talkSPORT, Maguire said, "I was confident that after the season I had, I could play a significant role for my country this summer. The decision shocked and disappointed me. I wish the best for the players going."

Tuchel to Announce Squad on Friday

Meanwhile, talkSPORT reports that Tuchel is considering including Chelsea's Levi Colwill in the final squad. The defender recently returned to the pitch after a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in pre-season. Colwill has made five appearances for England, one under Tuchel last July. The usual defensive duo, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi, are expected to make the trip. Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United has secured a place on the squad, which may mean Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton will not be selected.

Tuchel's options at goalkeeper include Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, and James Trafford, with Brighton's Jason Steele joining the squad as the training goalkeeper. Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers are also expected to feature on the squad. England will face New Zealand and Costa Rica in preparation matches after arriving in the USA. The tournament begins with a group match against Croatia on June 17, followed by games against Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27. Tuchel will confirm his final 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday, May 22, at 11 AM local time.
