In the judo training hall where champions are made, Tamas Gergely has completed another training session with Alex Bologa and Daniel Vargoczki. Both athletes are visually impaired, and Gergely has guided them on their path to excellence. He has helped them overcome the fear of the unknown and become not just athletes, but individuals who no longer see their condition as a hindrance.

Tamas Gergely acts as the eyes for these athletes at World Championships, European Championships, and Paralympic Games. He has watched them grow and celebrated their success alongside Alex Bologa at medal ceremonies. The coach of champions explains what he has learned from athletes who, despite their visual impairments, are capable of performing incredible feats.

Tamas Gergely elaborates on what all of us can learn from the example set by the athletes he trains.

"Often, they are an example to me. They should motivate everyone."

What Does It Mean to Be a Coach of Champions?

Currently, it is an extraordinary achievement, but this journey began a long time ago, around 14 years, when Gergely became part of a project for visually impaired athletes, which he launched in 2012 at the initiative of the Paralympic Committee, alongside his colleagues Eniko Csokasi and Gianina Andreica.

How was it for him to take on athletes with visual impairments? Was it something unprecedented?

Yes, it was unprecedented. Gergely admits that at the time, he was unaware of the challenges. However, given his extensive experience in judo as both an athlete and a coach, it was a challenge he embraced. As the first in the country to take on such a project, Gergely and his team adapted well to the task.

What do they teach him each day through their perseverance and ability to become champions?

Frequently, Alex or Dan are an example to Gergely. Despite their impairments, they push forward and achieve extraordinary performances. This motivates Gergely and should inspire many young people, and not just them. It can motivate everyday people who may be stuck in their lives, despite not having similar impairments. Gergely believes this energy has helped him push through his own difficult times in life.

The Unique Qualities of Visually Impaired Athletes

What qualities does he see in them that he doesn't see in other athletes?

Firstly, it is determination and ambition. Gergely doesn't claim that other athletes lack these qualities, but they seem more evident in his visually impaired athletes. Their desire to overcome daily obstacles is channeled effectively into their sport, leading to their impressive results.

What are the biggest challenges they face, and what can the world learn from them?

The biggest challenge is how to overcome what one perceives as impossible. Just like these athletes, who face and fight daily with their impairments and daily challenges, it is possible to overcome these obstacles. Their success is an example to all.
