Trabzonspor Leaves Points Behind Against Anatolian Teams
In the Turkish Süper Lig this season, Trabzonspor remained competitive in the title race but suffered its biggest setbacks against Anatolian teams, losing a total of 23 points. Against the big three clubs, Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, and Galatasaray, Trabzonspor lost only 10 points. However, it was their poor performance against smaller Anatolian teams that proved costly.
Towards the end of the season, Trabzonspor, finishing third with 69 points, suffered significant point losses, particularly in the final matches. Their 3-0 defeat to Gençlerbirliği in the last round was a bitter end to a season that started well but ended poorly. Trabzonspor had lost 9 points in a four-week period following their crucial victory against Galatasaray at home, severely impacting their championship chances.
Trabzonspor, despite a modest budget, managed to perform well against the big three. In six matches against Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, and Galatasaray, Trabzonspor secured two wins, two draws, and two losses, accumulating 8 points. They managed to draw four points from Beşiktaş and Galatasaray, but failed to gain any points from Fenerbahçe.
However, it was the losses to smaller Anatolian teams that ultimately cost Trabzonspor the title. They lost 23 points against these teams. Trabzonspor lost to Gençlerbirliği in two matches and drew with Alanyaspor twice. They also lost away to Konyaspor and drew with Samsunspor, Gaziantep FK, Antalyaspor, Başakşehir, and Göztepe. These points lost to Anatolian teams ultimately decided the season's outcome.
In the first half of the season, Trabzonspor drew with Samsunspor, Gaziantep FK, and Alanyaspor, and lost to Gençlerbirliği. In the second half, they drew with Antalyaspor, Alanyaspor, and Başakşehir, lost to Konyaspor, and drew with Göztepe. They also lost to Gençlerbirliği again in the last round.
Trabzonspor really let their guard down against the smaller teams this season. They should've capitalized more on those matches. What do you think, are they just overconfident or is there a bigger issue?
