The Serbian boxing team had a remarkable second day at the "Beogradski Pobednik" tournament in Obrenovac, securing 12 medals by advancing to the semifinals with 12 wins and seven losses.
The most experienced fighters in the Serbian team inspired their teammates with victories in the quarterfinals. However, the star of the tournament was Ukrainian boxer Oleksandar Hizhnyak, the current Olympic champion from the Paris Games in 2024.
Hizhnyak dominated his quarterfinal match against the brave Turkish boxer Emre Parlak, stopping the fight just five to six seconds before the end of the third and final round, following three knockdowns.
The "Tank from Poltava" was intimidating in the ring, causing disappointment among Serbian boxing fans. The much-anticipated final match between the ruthless Ukranian and Serbian boxing star Rastko Simić did not materialize due to Simić's recent illness. Simić was advised by a doctor not to compete, leading to his match against Mert Aybuga ending in a forfeit.
Despite the setback, Serbian boxers and boxers secured 12 wins and 12 medals by advancing to the semifinals. Among the winners were Almir Memić, Jovan Nikolić, Vahid Abasov, Filip Džida, Dmitrij Gorbenko, Artur Ngapetjan, and Ljubiša Staletović in the men's category.
In the women's division, Serbia celebrated victories by Nina Radovanović, Natalija Šadrina, Anastasija Bošković, Nikolina Gajić, and Milena Matović. The women will begin their semifinal matches on Saturday at 12:00. Three more Serbian female boxers will directly enter the semifinals: Anastasija Bošković, Sara Miljković, and Natalija Simić. The men's semifinals will start tomorrow at 16:30.
The 63rd "Beogradski Pobednik" is under the patronage of the recently founded World Boxing. Tomorrow, legendary Kazakh champion Gennadiy Golovkin, recently elected president of World Boxing, will visit Belgrade, adding prestige and significance to the tournament.
A total of 24 national federations are participating in the tournament: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Philippines, Slovenia, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Wales. A total of 183 boxers and boxers are competing, with 114 in the men's category and 69 in the women's category.
