Ryan Garcia, the WBC welterweight champion, has selected Conor Benn as his opponent for his first title defense. Garcia made the announcement on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, revealing that the bout will take place on September 12 in Las Vegas.
The announcement comes a day after boxing financier Turki Alalshikh stated that Canelo Alvarez will meet WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the same date. While Garcia typically fights on DAZN, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is open for the traditional Mexican Independence Day weekend card.
Benn, 25-1 (14 KOs), recently returned from a victory over former 140lbs champion Regis Prograis by unanimous decision on April 26. Despite the move down to welterweight, Benn followed his win by signing a multi-fight extension with Zuffa Boxing. This means that bitter promotional rivals Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Dana White of Zuffa Boxing will be matching their fighters in this glamour-division clash.
Garcia, 27, won his belt on February 21 by defeating Mario Barrios by unanimous decision. Prior to the Fallon appearance, Garcia told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that he aims to become the new face of boxing, replacing former stablemate Canelo Alvarez. Benn is currently the WBC’s No. 1 ranked contender.
This fight is shaping up to be a blockbuster! Who do you think will come out on top? I'm going with Garcia, but Benn's got some serious fire in his eyes. Let's see if he can keep up with Garcia's speed and power.
