Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Bărbosu has been provisionally suspended following three whereabouts failures within 12 months, as announced by the International Testing Agency (ITA) on May 7. The suspension aligns with the World Anti-Doping Code.
Whereabouts Failures Explained
Athletes like Bărbosu are required to provide daily whereabouts and a specific 60-minute time slot each day for testing. Missing unannounced out-of-competition tests three times within a year constitutes an Anti-Doping Rule Violation, according to the ITA's press release.
Bărbosu's Recent Challenges
Bărbosu, a 19-year-old gymnast who recently transferred to Stanford University in the US, was reportedly missed once in Romania and twice in the US. These failures triggered disciplinary proceedings in April and led to the ITA handling the case. Bărbosu requested the case be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division to present her case.
Public Statement
In a message on Instagram, Bărbosu clarified that the situation does not involve the use of prohibited substances and expressed gratitude for the support she received during the process. She noted that adapting to life in the US has been challenging.
Awards and Achievements
Bărbosu has won significant recognition in her sport. She was named Gymnast of the Year 2025 by European Gymnastics and won four medals at the European Championship in Leipzig in 2025. Despite her success, Bărbosu now faces the challenge of defending herself against the whereabouts violations.
