Romanian goalkeeper Valentin Cojocaru is in transfer talks with CSU Cluj, according to recent reports. Cojocaru, 30, currently plays for Pogon Szczecin in Poland and has a contract with the Polish club until the summer of 2027. However, an early termination of his contract is considered possible, which has opened up discussions for a return to the Romanian Superliga.
Transfer Background
CSU Cluj officials have initiated negotiations with Cojocaru after learning they would lose Edvinas Gertmonas this summer. Head coach Cristiano Bergodi is looking for a new goalkeeper to join the summer camp, and Cojocaru, a former FCSB player, is at the top of their list. Cluj has also shown interest in Răzvan Sava, but this option is more complicated due to Sava's ties to Udinese and the high transfer fee.
Cojocaru joined Pogon Szczecin in July 2024 and has played 33 matches this season, conceding 47 goals and maintaining 7 clean sheets. His market value is estimated at 700,000 euros, according to Transfermarkt. Throughout his career, Cojocaru has played for several clubs, including FCSB, Crotone, Frosinone, Apollon Limassol, Viitorul Constanța, FC Voluntari, Dnipro, Feyenoord, Leuven, and Pogon Szczecin.
National Team Prospects
A return to the Romanian Superliga could also impact Cojocaru's national team prospects. He recently stated that he has not been contacted by the Romanian national team but left the door open to discussions with the FRF. Gică Hagi, the national team coach, has recently begun contacting players abroad by phone.
“I haven’t had any contact with anyone. Only on my birthday do they say ‘Happy birthday’ and that’s about it. Unfortunately, no one has called me,” Cojocaru told Digi Sport.
The move would be significant for CSU Cluj, which had a successful season, finishing second in the Romanian Superliga and reaching the final of the Romanian Cup, which they lost on penalties to Universitatea Craiova. The club is now preparing for the upcoming season.
Is Cojocaru the right choice for Cluj? He's got experience, but Cluj needs someone who can step up in the big games. What do you think, fellow fans?
