The WBA has elevated Rolly Romero to 'Super World Champion' status, despite his absence from the ring for a year and the lack of a scheduled fight date. This move allows Jack Catterall’s upcoming fight with Shakhram Giyasov in Egypt to be reclassified as a full title bout, originally planned for the ‘regular’ title.

WBA’s Decision and Rules

The WBA’s website explained the decision, stating that it was made by the WBA Championships Committee following a formal request from Romero’s team and after reviewing his accomplishments as a three-division champion. The resolution, supported by the organization’s rules and regulations, grants the Championships Committee and the WBA President the authority to designate Super Champions under exceptional circumstances to serve the best interests of the sport.

Romero's Obligations and Recent Wins

According to the WBA, Romero must face the winner of the Catterall-Giyasov fight within 180 days after the bout takes place. Romero is 17-2 (13 KOs), having won his last two fights at junior welterweight and 147 lbs, defeating Manuel James and Ryan Garcia, respectively, following a one-sided loss to Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz.
