Rain has halted the semifinal match at the ATP Masters 1000 clay court tournament in Rome between Italian Jannik Sinner and Russian Daniil Medvedev, with Sinner leading 4-2 in the third set. The match is set to resume on Saturday, with Medvedev serving at 5-4 in the seventh game of the third set.
Sinner is chasing his 33rd consecutive victory at the Masters 1000 level and his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title. Last year, he triumphed in Paris, and this year, he has won in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
The match began with the 24-year-old Sinner dominating against his 30-year-old opponent, leading 4-0 and holding two breaks of serve until the end of the first set, which he won 6-2.
Despite such a poor start, Medvedev responded with a 3-0 lead in the second set. Unlike Sinner, he failed to maintain this lead, and Sinner equalized to 3-3 in the second set. Notably, Medvedev had three break-point opportunities at 3-0 up but failed to capitalize on them.
The second set concluded with a tightly contested tiebreaker, where Sinner appeared increasingly physically drained on court. At 6-5, Medvedev used his third set point to tie the match.
Medvedev won the first game of the third set, but Sinner went on a streak, winning the next three games despite his obvious struggle to move freely, often grimacing. At a score of 4-2 in favor of Sinner, with Medvedev serving, the rain began and prevented any further play on Friday.
Earlier, Casper Ruud of Norway secured his place in the final with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Italian Lucian Darderij. The 27-year-old Ruud is aiming for his 15th ATP title in his career, though he has not won a tournament this year. Of his 14 titles, Ruud has won 12 on clay surfaces.
This rain delay is killing me! How could such a thrilling match be interrupted? I can't wait to see how it plays out on Saturday. Will Sinner continue his winning streak, or will Medvedev finally catch a break? #TennisTension
