Last year, we were struck by the tragic news of Diogo Jota's death in Spain, alongside his brother. Had he not passed, we would have undoubtedly witnessed his brilliant plays and goals this season.

Jota would have undoubtedly been a part of the Portuguese squad for the World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada within the next month.

To honor Jota, Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez has posthumously included him on the national team roster. Portugal will play for their friend who left behind a wife and children.

"He was our strength, our joy. The loss of Diogo was unforgettable and a very difficult moment, but the very next day, all of us felt a fight for Diogo's dream and the example he always gave in our team. The spirit, strength, and example of Diogo Jota are that +1 and will forever remain +1," Martinez said.

The roster includes:

  • Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, Rui Silva, José Sá, Ricardo Paúl
  • Defenders: Matheus Nuno, Diogo Dalot, Nelson Semedo, João Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Gonçalo Inacio, Tomás Araújo, Renato Sanches, Nuno Mendes
  • Midfielders: Samu Castillejo, Ruben Neves, Vitinha, João Moutinho, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva
