Madrid Welcomes the Pope

More than a million people flooded the streets of Madrid on Sunday morning, turning the city into a sea of flags, flowers, and voices chanting "Long live the Pope." The crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of Pope Leo XIV as he made his way through the bustling capital. He arrived in the papal mobile vehicle, traveling down the main avenue, Paseo de la Castellana, heading toward the iconic Plaza de Cibeles to preside over a solemn Mass.

Vatican officials and local organizers estimated the attendance at approximately 1.2 million people. Spectators lined the route, waving national and religious flags while throwing flower petals as the pontiff approached the square. The atmosphere was electric, blending religious devotion with a sense of national celebration.

A Message of Inclusion and Unity

Before the Mass, the Pope received the keys to the city from the mayor. In the official book of guests, Leo XIV wrote: "May Madrid remain a hospitable and inclusive city, where social life is inspired by true human values." This message underscores the central theme of his visit. The Pope’s itinerary, running from June 6 to June 12, also includes stops in Barcelona and the Canary Islands. There, he plans to meet with migrants who have risked their lives crossing the sea from West Africa.

This trip marks the Pope's first visit to an EU country outside of Italy. He has expressed hope that the tour will serve as a global example of respecting "every human being." He also issued a call for political leaders to stop dividing their electorates, urging instead for policies based on solidarity.

Voices from the Crowd

The crowd included people from all walks of life. Andrea Margarita, a 72-year-old from Peru who arrived in Spain six months ago, shared her feelings while waiting in her wheelchair with her daughter. "I am thrilled that he is praying for us migrants and for our safety," she said. Her sentiment echoed the Pope's recent meetings with migrants and the homeless on Saturday, as well as his vigil with 600,000 young people in Madrid.

Following the Mass, the Pope is scheduled to hold a private meeting with members of his Augustinian order. Later in the afternoon, he will meet with figures from the worlds of entertainment, sports, and culture at a concert hall in central Madrid. The visit continues to draw massive attention, highlighting the Pope's enduring global influence.
