Olympiakos Ends 13-Year Title Drought

The Olympiacos BC basketball team ended a 13-year championship drought, securing their fourth European title with a hard-fought 92-85 victory over Real Madrid Baloncesto in the EuroLeague Final. The decisive game took place on Sunday at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall in Athens, marking a historic moment for the Piraeus-based club.

Real Madrid started brightly, racing to a 15-3 lead within the first four minutes. The Spanish giants held a seven-point advantage at the end of the first quarter and briefly extended it to double digits early in the second. However, Olympiacos mounted a resilient comeback, taking a narrow 46-44 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw Real Madrid regain momentum, entering the final period with a four-point cushion. The game, however, was destined to be decided in a dramatic finish.

Hezonja’s Missed Shots Seal the Fate

Mario Hezonja was pivotal for Real Madrid, finishing as the team’s second-leading scorer with 19 points, along with five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Trey Lyles led all scorers with 24 points, though he managed only three in the second half. Andres Feliz added 13.

The tension peaked in the final minutes. Hezonja hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 80-80 with 2:12 remaining. But he then missed two critical shots that allowed Olympiacos to pull ahead 84-80 and later 86-80. Evan Fournier, who led Olympiacos with 20 points and four assists, sank free throws to make it 88-80 with just 36 seconds left.

Real Madrid attempted a stunning rally, capitalizing on steals and offensive rebounds after intentionally missed free throws. They cut the deficit to 88-85, leaving Andres Feliz with a potential game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds on the clock. Feliz missed, and Alec Peters, who contributed 16 points and seven rebounds for Olympiacos, converted all four of his final free throws to seal the 92-85 victory.

This was Real Madrid’s 22nd EuroLeague or Champions Cup final appearance, leaving them with an even record of 11 titles and 11 losses in championship games. For Olympiacos, this was their fourth title in ten final appearances.
