Bulgaria's Population Drops by 500,000, but Bureaucracy Swells by 3,000

In a stark contrast to the country's dwindling population, Bulgaria's administrative apparatus has significantly expanded. Over the past five years, the nation's population has decreased by nearly half a million people, yet the number of civil servants has grown by 3,000.

Despite the population decline, the compensation for civil servants in equivalent positions can vary by up to three to four times. The highest earners are the directors of departments, with bonuses reaching up to 6,383 leva.

This trend highlights the incongruity between Bulgaria's demographic challenges and its bureaucratic growth, raising questions about the efficiency and necessity of the expanding civil service.
