Nadia Comăneci, the legendary gymnast, has expressed her admiration for Cristi Chivu following his success as the coach of Inter in Italy. Comăneci, whose groundbreaking performance in Montreal 1976 marks its 50th anniversary this year, was sought out by Italians to comment on Chivu's achievements.
"The first 10 in gymnastics history was scored by Nadia Comăneci, and she was Romanian... I give 10 to everyone, including myself," Chivu, Inter's coach, stated.
In return, Comăneci praised Chivu's character and leadership. "Thank you, Cristian, for remembering me. It's been great, a source of pride for all of Romania. He's a very kind and modest person. I've seen him online, speaking as Inter's coach, and it's clear he has a wonderful character that helps him lead so many players. I've met him at sports events a few times. He has always been much loved in Romania. It's wonderful to see his great success, especially in his first year as head coach."
Comăneci also addressed Chivu's post-Coppa Italia victory statement, which referred to her performance in 1976. "I believe significant moments in sports can inspire different generations and certain figures can become symbols. The Perfect 10 isn't just a number, it's an example: it means hard work, courage, and resilience, which a great football team like Inter needs to win. It's wonderful that Chivu thought of this during a moment of celebration."
Comăneci concluded by emphasizing the importance of remaining connected to one's roots. "Romania unites us. Our athletes have a special pride in being Romanian... No matter where you go, whether in Italy or America, you remain connected to the place you come from. This builds character. You can't forget where you come from and who you are: Cristian knows this well."
In a final message to Chivu, Comăneci said, "I admire him and am so proud of him. He's a wonderful man and a great coach. He goes beyond the great results he's achieved, and is simply a good person."
