A major crash in the MotoGP race for the Catalan Grand Prix has led to the suspension of the event. The incident occurred midway through the race at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit in Montmeló. The crash involved several leading riders, including Spaniard Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and Talijan Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati-VR46).
The incident began when Marquez, who was battling for the lead with Pedra Acosta (KTM), struck Acosta with his front wheel, causing mechanical issues with Acosta’s motorcycle. Marquez then lost control, hit a tire wall, and was thrown from his bike, which flipped several times. Di Giannantonio was also involved in the crash, hitting a wheel from Marquez’s destroyed motorcycle.
Race Suspended, Marquez Rushed to Hospital
The race was immediately suspended, with plans to resume once the track is cleared. Acosta managed to return to the box with a punctured rear tire, thanks to the assistance of two Yamaha-Pramac riders who helped prevent him from falling. Frenchman Johann Zarco (Honda-LCR) appeared to have injured his ankle, as he hobbled off the track.
Alex Marquez, who was conscious when the medical team arrived, was transported to the hospital for further examination.
This crash is a stark reminder of the dangers in MotoGP. How can we balance the need for thrilling races with the safety of the riders?
