The clay of Roland Garros has finally claimed another legend, but the story isn't over. French tennis icon Gael Monfils bowed out in heartbreaking fashion, losing a five-set thriller to Hugo Gaston. Yet, amidst the tears and the fading echoes of the Stade Roland Garros, Monfils revealed his sights are set on a spectacular farewell tour that stretches across the globe.
The Wimbledon Wildcard Question
Monfils confirmed that he and his team have submitted a request for a wildcard entry into Wimbledon. The wait is on. He acknowledged the fierce competition, noting that many deserving players are also vying for a spot. "We asked for an invitation to Wimbledon and are waiting to see if we get it," Monfils stated, displaying his characteristic humility. "But there are many other players who, without a doubt, deserve it much more than me."
A Global Farewell Tour
If the grass courts of London don't call his name, the hard courts of North America might. Monfils expressed a strong desire to play in Montreal, wanting to bid a proper goodbye to the Canadian fans who have long adored his flamboyant style. He also plans to request a wildcard from the French Tennis Federation for the US Open, ensuring his presence at the Grand Slam where he once reached the final.
His schedule remains tight. Monfils is determined to be in Europe by early September for his daughter's first day of school. Post-Asia, the curtain calls will likely happen in Lyon, possibly Vienna, and hopefully in his hometown of Paris. "At the end of the year, I can tell you I will play in Lyon, maybe Vienna, and hopefully Paris," he said.
Family First
Behind the global star is a devoted father. Monfils shared a touching moment with his young daughter, who simply wants her dad home. "My daughter doesn't understand much yet, and that's good," he explained. "Last night I told her: 'Dad has to play one match and if it's over, he'll come home. Do you want me to come home?' and she answered: 'Come home fast.' With Elina (Svitolina), we protect her a lot. We agreed we'll tell her more later."
Reflecting on his emotional exit, Monfils admitted the send-off exceeded even his wildest dreams. "I didn't expect such a send-off even in my craziest dreams," he said. "The days from Thursday and Monday will remain in my memory forever." As for his legacy? "I was myself from start to finish. I'm a happy and warm person, something like that."
