Luka Modrić, the Croatian midfielder recovering from an injury, has confirmed his return to play for Milan from the first minute against Cagliari. In an exclusive interview with Italian media, Modrić stated that he is ready to return to the field and spoke about his relationship with coach Massimiliano Allegri and his future plans. He emphasized his happiness at Milan, but noted that the focus is now on securing a place in the Champions League.
Ready to Return with Mask
After praising his teammates from the stands in the match against Genoa, Modrić is returning to the lineup for Milan's crucial match that could secure a Champions League spot for next season. "I feel good and am physically getting better. I've returned to team training and am getting used to wearing the mask. I'm ready to return," said Modrić in an interview with Sportmediaset. "I can hardly wait to play again. It's hard to watch from the stands because you can't help your teammates, as was the case in the match against Genoa. Of course, the decision is Allegri's, but I am available."
When asked if he would look like a superhero because of the mask, he laughed. "No, I feel like a normal person. I wear it for protection, as advised by my doctor. I don't feel like a superhero." He highlighted passion as a key factor in his long-lasting career. "There are many factors, from good sleep and quality training to dedication to details, but the most important is my passion and love for football."
Future at Milan
Modrić also commented on his contract situation. "I can say that I am very happy at Milan, but right now the most important thing is Sunday's match against Cagliari and securing the Champions League. We'll see about the rest. I have a good relationship with the club, the board, and the coach."
However, he revealed his ambitions. "When I chose Milan, I wanted to help the team in the fight for trophies. We didn't achieve that this year, but it's clear that I would like to win something with Milan. Still, I repeat, I am focused solely on the match this Sunday."
On His Relationship with Allegri
Regarding speculation that he might become Allegri's assistant after retiring, Modrić said: "I have a good relationship with him, but we haven't discussed it. I still enjoy playing, and when I decide to end my career, I will think about it. When will I retire? I don't know, we'll see after Sunday..."
He also spoke about working with the renowned Italian coach. "He is a great coach who has achieved impressive results with Milan and Juventus. He has returned to the Rossoneri and is doing an extraordinary job. He prepares matches excellently, has a strong personality, and I am happy to work with him."
Believes Croatia Will Be Competitive in the World Cup
The 2018 Golden Ball winner also expressed his opinion on the Italian league. "The impression is very positive. Italian football is competitive and better than people think abroad. The league is challenging, which did not surprise me as I have been following Italian football since my youth. Serie A is one of the best leagues in the world, in the last ten years, Juventus and Inter have played the Champions League final, and Milan reached the semifinals."
Finally, he hinted at his participation in the 2026 World Cup, his fifth in his career. "Croatia must defend its colors as always, give everything it has, and make supporters proud. We are in a tough group, but the first goal is to advance to the knockout stage. We are competitive, though I don't know how far we can go. We were second and third, and I am aware that people have high expectations, and I can only say that we will give our maximum."
