Ivan Martinović, one of Croatia's most beloved handball players, was a guest on the second episode of the podcast “Karijera u retrovizoru”. This is the only Croatian sports podcast conducted during a car ride, where the handball team captain shared a plethora of anecdotes from his career and offered advice to young players.
He recounted his unbelievable relationship with his idol, Domagoj Duvnjak, from whom he inherited the captain’s armband. In 2010, as a 12-year-old, Martinović took a photograph with the legendary "Dule," and later, during his first team training, he found himself sharing a room with him as a roommate.
- I couldn’t believe it! I was sitting quietly in the room when the great Dule invited me for a drink after training. I said: "Thank you, but no thanks, I'll stay in the room." I thought to myself, "Where could I possibly go for a drink with him?" Now I'm the captain of the team, Dule is my friend, and he even attended my wedding. If I told young Ivan that this would happen in life, he wouldn’t believe me - Martinović joked.
Martinović also shared how he still enjoys watching the reception videos in Zagreb from January 2025 and 2026:
- These were incredible scenes! Everyone was singing, flares were going off, and our flags were everywhere. Can you believe that even today, when I’m feeling down, I turn on YouTube and relive those receptions - he confided to the podcast host Milan Stjelić.
Martinović revealed numerous interesting details about the elections involving Dagur Sigurdsson and his teammates, but he also shared some of the toughest moments of his career with the public.
Who would've thought that Ivan's journey would take him from a 12-year-old kid taking a photo with his idol to being the captain of the national team? It's an incredible story, but I can't help but wonder how he managed to keep his head up during the tough times. What do you think kept him going?
