Mateo Kovačić (32) has been sidelined at Manchester City for three years after the club acquired him from Chelsea for a fee of 29 million euros. According to Turkish insider Ekrem Konur, Kovačić has been struggling due to chronic injury problems, his inability to adapt to high-intensity play, and Pep Guardiola’s desire to rejuvenate the squad. This season, Kovačić has only played six matches due to severe ankle and Achilles tendon injuries. Overall, he has made 94 appearances for City with ten goals and five assists.

Season Marred by Injuries

Kovačić's 2025/26 season was exceptionally challenging. Following an ankle surgery in winter and recurring Achilles tendon issues, the experienced midfielder missed critical parts of the season. Although he returned to the field in April, he struggled to find form within City’s high-intensity system.

Guardiola's desire to rejuvenate the squad, coupled with Kovačić's having passed 30, prompted the club to consider selling him. His high weekly wages and injury history solidified City’s intention to offload a player they paid nearly 30 million euros for three years ago. Offers in the range of 15 to 20 million euros are now considered sufficient for his departure.

Interest from Milan, Inter, and Gulf Clubs

Interest in Kovačić is already present, and he is expected to be one of the most sought-after names on the transfer market. Milan is looking for an experienced player to lead their midfield and is ready to offer Kovačić a central role in their project.

His former club, Inter, is also tracking him as a "Plan B" in case Hakan Calhanoglu leaves the club. The most serious interest outside of Europe comes from Saudi Arabia, where clubs Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli are attempting to lure him with wages far exceeding Premier League standards.

Moreover, Kovačić has been reportedly offered to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş through intermediaries. However, these clubs are reportedly seeking detailed medical reports before taking further steps.

Real Options for Career Continuation

Given the circumstances, it would not be surprising if Kovačić's career at Manchester City concludes this summer. Injuries have significantly limited his contributions and made it difficult to adapt to the high demands of Pep Guardiola’s system.

While a return to Italy sounds appealing, his injury history may deter Serie A clubs. Thus, moving to Turkey or Saudi Arabia seems a more promising option, where slower match tempos could help him prolong his playing career.

Is Kovačić's career truly over at Manchester City, or is there a chance he could bounce back? With all these injury setbacks, he needs a fresh start, but will Serie A be too cautious to take the risk? What about the allure of big money in Saudi Arabia? It's a crossroads for this midfielder!
