Coach of Dinamo, Mario Kovačević, highlighted the team's improved performance in the second half of their match against Slaven Belupo (4-1) in the penultimate round of the HNL. "In the second half, we looked like the champions we are, much more concrete and effective," Kovačević said. "Of course, their goalkeeper made mistakes, and we took advantage of them."
The match began in Koprivnica with a strong opening from the home team. Slaven Belupo's Filip Krušelj scored in the 27th minute. However, Dinamo quickly equalized with a goal by Fran Topić in the 50th minute. Gabriel Vidović took the lead for Dinamo just eight minutes later, and Dion Drena Beljo scored his 31st goal of the season in the 80th minute. Juan Cordoba sealed the victory with the fourth goal in the 85th minute.
Dinamo has already secured the title of Croatian champions and won the Cup. This victory further extends their lead to 20 points over second-place Hajduk.
"In the first half, we tried, but Slaven was also good and put pressure on us. We made too many mistakes. It was clear that this team played together for the first time, but in moments, it was good, though we were not concrete," Kovačević said. "The second half was what we should look like as champions, much better and concrete. Their goalkeeper made mistakes, and we took advantage of them. The start wasn't ideal, but the end was as we wanted."
Kovačević introduced young players towards the end of the match, giving opportunities to Zebić and Brundić. "I am satisfied, especially with those who came in later. Zebić seems to have been with us for a long time, and the other young players were good. They show they are in rhythm because they play for the juniors. The players who played less didn't have the rhythm, but as the match progressed, they got better. I have to be satisfied with everyone at the end."
The coach also commented on the absence of Mikić: "We wanted to see Tabinas on the right side, and he was very good. It doesn't mean Mikić won't get an opportunity next time."
In the final round, Dinamo faces Lokomotiva at Maksimir, and the coach is calling for a grand celebration. "I am the happiest person in the world. I invite the fans to fill the stadium and have a true public celebration. We all deserve it. We and the fans are one. I have to praise them today. There is nothing more beautiful than singing with them at the end. After Lokomotiva, we will celebrate longer."
Kovačević, who used to coach Slaven Belupo, also commented on returning to Koprivnica. "I am always amazed by Slaven. The love is mutual. I gave myself as a player and for these years as a coach. I really wanted a win for my birthday. Belupo had a very good autumn, competing for Europe, but they lost key players and had some injuries, leading to a bad streak. Though they didn't qualify for Europe, everything else was good. It was a season without stress. I am sure they will be even better next season."
The coach of Slaven Belupo, Mario Gregurina, was disappointed with the result. "My boys were truly phenomenal in the first half. I am very satisfied with how we responded and stuck to the plan. It could have ended 2-0 or 3-0. I won't comment much on the second half. Simply, in such a match against such an opponent, you expect to save in two or three situations because Dinamo is sure to create many."
