Hrgović Triumphs Over Allen in Heavyweight Bout
Croatian boxer Filip Hrgović dominated Dave Allen in a three-round heavyweight bout at the "Eco-Power" stadium in Doncaster, England. Allen's trainer threw in the towel at 2:37 of the third round, recognizing that the night was not in his corner's favor.
The disparity between the two fighters was evident from the start. The 33-year-old Hrgović landed three consecutive right hooks to Allen's face, while the 34-year-old British boxer responded with a right overhand that missed its mark. Hrgović followed up with another right to Allen’s face.
Hrgović's victory seemed inevitable by the second round, as he relentlessly pummeled Allen throughout the round while the Doncaster fighter desperately tried to defend himself. The 2016 bronze Olympic medalist shifted his focus to Allen's body, landing a left to the abdomen before knocking out Allen’s legs with another heavy right.
The third round was a grim spectacle. Hrgović continued to deliver heavy, frequent blows to Allen's body. The audience fell silent when Hrgović landed a left hook that visibly shook Allen's legs. Allen fell to the mat, but referee Steve Gray ruled it a slip. Allen rose but knew he was in trouble. Hrgović continued to attack, and his every punch found its mark, causing Allen's head to bounce from side to side. Allen’s trainer, Mur, had a brief conversation with Gray over the ring. After Hrgović landed another left followed by a right, Mur threw in the towel. The crowd booed the decision, but Allen's ninth career loss was a just one.
Allen, with a record of 25-9-2 (20 by knockout), addressed the booing after the match.
"Jamie is like a brother to me, I love him to death," Allen said. "This is my sh*ty family. If Jamie Mur and Nigel Travis say it's enough, then it's enough. Thank you for caring about me."
The victorious Hrgović, now with a record of 20-1 (15 by knockout), apologized to the crowd.
"I'm sorry, guys, I know I'm not the favorite here," he said. "Thank you to Dave Allen for this great event."
There were reports that Hrgović could face rising heavyweight star Moses Itau on August 8, provided he emerged from this fight with minimal damage. George Warren from "Queensberry" confirmed that the fight is close to being finalized.
"I'll fight Moses Itau, whoever it is, I'll talk to my team," Hrgović said. "I don't think I have any qualms. I'll sign the contract immediately. First, I'll talk to my team. I'll fight anyone."
