In LaLiga's 37th week, Atletico Madrid faced Girona. With a goal by Ademelo Lookman, Diego Simeone's team secured a 1-0 victory, maintaining their fourth-place position heading into the final week of the season.
Farewell to Griezmann
Antoine Griezmann, who has agreed to join MLS team Orlando City, took to the field for his final match with Atletico Madrid, a club he has been with for much of his career. The experienced French star, who started the match and played the full 90 minutes, addressed the fans after the game at a stadium ceremony.
"I'm Sorry Again"
In his heartfelt statement, Griezmann admitted his regret over transferring to Barcelona from Atletico Madrid. "First, I want to thank you for being here. This is incredible. Secondly, and more importantly, I'm sorry again. I didn't realize how much love I received here, I was too young. I made a mistake, I came to my senses. I did everything I could to return here and enjoy it again."
From Barcelona Back to Atletico
Antoine Griezmann began his career in the youth system of Maconnais in France before moving to Real Sociedad's academy. He made it to the first team there and signed with Atletico Madrid in 2014. In 2019, he transferred to Barcelona for a €120 million buyout. After a short stint with Barcelona, he returned to Atletico on loan in 2023 and then permanently with a buyout in the same year.
The 35-year-old has played 500 matches for Atletico Madrid, scoring 212 goals and providing 100 assists. He also played 202 matches for Real Sociedad and 35 for Barcelona.
Griezmann's journey from Atletico to Barcelona and back again is the stuff of legends. Do you think he would have achieved more if he stayed at Atletico from the start? Or was the Barcelona experience necessary for his growth?
