The EuroLeague has officially released the list of referees who will officiate the Final Four, taking place from May 22-24 in Athens. One thing immediately caught the public's attention—there are no Serbian referees among the chosen officials!
The Final Four will feature Fenerbahçe, Olympiacos, Real Madrid, and Valencia, with officiating duties being shared by an experienced international team, including a strong presence from the Balkan region.
Notably, the list includes four referees from the ABA League region: Sreten Radović (Croatia), Luka Kardum (Croatia), Milan Nedović (Slovenia), and Miloš Koljenšić (Montenegro). Serbian representatives are notably absent.
Among the chosen are also proven names from the rest of Europe—Mehdi Difala, Olegs Latiševs, Robert Lotermozer, and Karlos Peruga—referees with extensive experience in EuroLeague final tournaments.
There are also some "new faces" among the chosen, along with those who have been standards at the Final Four for years. Kardum and Koljenšić will be debuting at the final tournament, Nedović is making his second appearance, and Peruga is logging his third. On the other hand, Radović, Difala, Lotermozer, and Latiševs have years of experience officiating at the final tournaments of elite competitions.
This list further fuels the ongoing debates about the status of Serbian refereeing in European basketball.
Earlier, the EuroLeague had released a list of 28 referees from 14 countries for the playoffs, with only one Serbian representative—Ilija Belošević—featured, which was received as a warning sign in the basketball community.
While referees from Slovenia and Croatia are becoming increasingly present in EuroLeague final tournaments, Serbian refereeing, once a standard part of elite events, is becoming rarer on the biggest stage.
This is a massive concern for Serbian basketball fans. How can our country, once a powerhouse in European basketball, fall behind so much in officiating? It's time for a serious discussion and action to get Serbian referees back on the biggest stages. What do you think is the solution to this issue?
