Former German defender Markus Babbel has sharply criticized coach Julian Nagelsmann's handling of the goalkeeper situation ahead of the World Cup. Despite Manuel Neuer's retirement from the national team nearly two years ago, Nagelsmann has decided to include him in the squad, with Neuer expected to reclaim his role as the first-choice goalkeeper at the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.

While Neuer’s return makes sense given his recent form, Babbel argues that Nagelsmann's communication has created unnecessary tension within the team. Babbel, a member of the 1996 European Championship-winning squad, points out that the problem isn’t just Neuer’s return but the way Nagelsmann has managed the situation.

Babbel's Criticism

Babbel, a veteran of German football, is not satisfied with the way the situation has been handled. He argues that the indecision and poor communication have led to a lack of clarity among the players.

"The way he communicates is simply a disaster. This back-and-forth from the start has been frustrating us. You want clear instructions, and every player feels the same way. Matthias Sammer is right in saying that the best players should go to the World Cup. But no one can tell me that Nagelsmann only realized last week that 'Oh, Neuer is actually in great form,'” Babbel stated.

Baumann's Situation

The uncertainty appears to have hit Oliver Baumann the hardest. He was seen as the leading candidate for the first-choice goalkeeper position following Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury. Now, it seems Neuer will be the first-choice goalkeeper, and Baumann will likely serve as his backup.

"Baumann has played over 500 Bundesliga games and had an excellent season. If I don’t trust him now, I should have known that well in advance, not just 14 days before the announcement. What if Neuer gets injured again? Then Baumann will be good enough, right? No one can take this seriously anymore," Babbel said.

"I take off my hat to Oliver Baumann for still wanting to go to the World Cup and accepting this. I probably would have reacted differently and said, 'If you don’t trust me, then do your own damn thing,'" Babbel concluded.

The German team, which includes Oliver Baumann, will start in Group E against Curacao, Wallis and Futuna, and Ecuador.
