Chris Eubank Snr has once again voiced his concerns over the health of his son, Chris Eubank Jnr, following his recent bouts with Conor Benn. In April, Jnr won a highly acclaimed Fight of the Year against Benn, but seven months later, he struggled and lost the rematch by a wide margin.
Now 36 years old and boasting a record of 35-4 (25 KOs), Eubank Jnr has shifted focus to expanding his property portfolio in Dubai and becoming a father to twins. However, Snr is not enthusiastic about his son’s return to the ring. He revealed that he was not paid to attend his son’s fights with Benn, and had previously expressed concerns about Jnr’s ability to make the 160lbs weight limit for both fights.
“The fight was wrong. The fight was all wrong. Junior’s shot,” Eubank Snr told Betway’s Playbook Boxing. “Junior is a businessman. Junior said to me, if it doesn’t make money, it doesn’t make sense. But he gave it up. He gave up kingship.”
The experience of seeing his son in the hospital after the fight was “traumatizing,” according to Snr. “When you have a son, you love him. I may not like some of his ways, but I love him,” he said.
Eubank Snr added that his son’s career is “shot” and “spent,” and that despite everyone seeing the danger, no one is paying attention. He urged for stricter rules to protect fighters and lamented the decline in boxing’s caliber compared to the past. “I have given my life to this. I only can wish Junior luck and mercy. It’s a very tricky world and it hasn't changed, yet. There’s a change coming,” he concluded.
Asked about his ongoing concerns for his son, Snr confirmed, “Of course.”
He also spoke critically about the boxing industry, noting that fighters who lose twice become “fodder.” His brother Simon died of frontal lobe dementia after a career of 20 losses and seven wins. “Boxing kills you,” Eubank Snr warned.
I can't help but feel Eubank Snr is right about the dangers of boxing, but damn, I wish Junior could just fight one more time. Does anyone else feel the same way or should he just hang up the gloves for good?
